Coming Home

Julie stood at the bottom of the hill looking up at her parent’s farmhouse.   It had been so long since she had been here.   As she made her way up the lane, she saw her mum standing in the doorway waving at her, her face all smiles, her grey hair looking almost white in the sunlight.   It filled her heart with joy to see her mum again, after all this time, she felt a longing deep inside.   Toby came running towards her, wagging his tail as usual, even his coat was starting to look a lot whiter than she’d remembered.   He scampered off into the wheatfield in pursuit of some poor unsuspecting wildlife no doubt, it brought back memories of her childhood, chasing Toby around the farmyard while he barked at the chickens.   The wheatfield seemed to glow as the sun rose in the sky giving it almost an ethereal look.   The old oak tree in the pasture still stood, tall and firm, like it had been there forever.   The rope swing was still hanging fr...

Stay Safe

Jenny watched as Toby stepped through the security gate and lowered the makeshift drawbridge.   She scanned the surrounding countryside looking for signs of the others.   It was a Tuesday after all, they always attacked on a Tuesday.   Toby slipped through the perimeter gate and headed off to where the electric fence had been damaged.   Her radio crackled into life. “Shouldn’t take too much to fix this” Toby’s voice sounded hollow, like he was in a box.   “Let me know if you see anything, I reckon I can outrun them in time” As Jenny scanned the trees for a sign of movement, she felt her heart racing in her chest.   The area around the compound had been cleared to give them a better view, but in all honesty did anyone really know what they were doing.   This was the twenty first century and they were holed up in a compound designed on a fourteenth century fort.   The moat had been her idea after she saw how the attackers seemed to hate t...

Andy's Lad

The car wouldn’t start at all this time, just kept chugging and spluttering and then it died. Toby cursed and swore, it’s a well-known fact that swearing at a machine always makes it work.  He was going to have to give up and telephone the garage.  Today was not a day he needed to stay home he really needed to be in work, occupying his mind. Half an hour later Jerry was loading the car onto his truck with a promise to let Toby know as soon as it was fixed.  “It won’t be cheap, but I’ll do my best mate” he said as he drove off.  Toby rang his boss to explain he would have to catch the bus so he would be late, but Dean had told him to just take the day off.  Apparently, he had quite a bit of time off due and Dean was going to make him take some.  Toby just couldn’t catch a break today. As he sank into the sofa the picture of his father on the mantlepiece seemed to smile at him and he found himself, not for the first time, wishing his Dad were there.  His...
